Respite

I walk along the shoreline

Gazing out at the water

As I’m watched over by the rocky cliffs

The sky is overcast with a dull but comforting grey

The clouds have seen better days

But they promise they’re doing fine

Despite the reassurance

Raindrops start to fall

I empathize

As I feel the same

Every step I take across the sand

Shaped and hardened by the water

I think about the things I’ve done

All in the past, relatively speaking

Had I done enough? Was I strong enough?

Had my resolve been strengthened

To get myself through the days

When it felt like all my strength had left me?

When I look back at my foot prints

Slowly being washed away by the tides

It was disheartening to know

That time works the same way

Eventually

Proof of my existence would erode away

Much like the water does to the sand

But as I keep walking, and walking

I create new prints

Along the sand of course

As long as I keep walking

I will reassure the universe that I am here

A glint of light shines my way

Reflecting off the water

The sky is blue, and the clouds are brighter

And now I walk a little taller
